The first session in counselling and psychotherapy is an important time. We’ll use some of our time to meet, get some practicalities out of the way, and start to discuss your goals for therapy. But there’s also time for us to get into some therapy as well. This will look different for different people, and my priority is to adapt to you and your needs.
Of course, I want to make sure that you’re welcomed in a friendly and pleasant way. This initial meeting is all about us creating a space, where you can feel at ease. This really helps us do the therapeutic work that matters to you.
As part of the first session, it’s helpful for me to know a bit about your background and what’s brought you to therapy. You don’t have to share anything you don’t want to, it’s just an opportunity for you to tell your story and help us understand your needs.
Together, we can begin to outline some goals for your therapy. These goals can be broad or specific, depending on what’s right for you. It’s a flexible process, and it’s simply to help us know that we’re aligned on what you want to get from therapy.
We might also take some time to discuss how therapy works, including the methods and techniques that it might include. I use what is called an “integrative” and “pluralistic” approach, which means I want to collaboratively decide with my clients on how the therapy takes place.
Confidentiality is important during all of our work together. I’ll explain our confidentiality policy, which guarantees that what you discuss in therapy stays between you and me.
Knowing that your conversations are private can help you feel secure in opening up about what’s happening for you. My commitment to all my clients is to be completely non-judgemental, supportive and honest.
During the first session, we might start to explore some of the feelings and issues that brought you to therapy. Sometimes, this can be an emotional experience, but it’s also a positive step towards understanding and healing. I’m here to support you, and we’ll move at a pace that’s right for you.
Counselling and Psychotherapy can be an amazing investment. We’re all doing our best, but there can be a lot to deal with. If you’re ready to start your counselling and psychotherapy journey, or you’d like more information, drop me a line to arrange a free consultation.
